Holidays and hope
Summer holidays are round the corner. In England, most students don’t finish school until the end of July and have six weeks holiday, but in Italy, unless you have “maturità” examinations, you are free for three months! That’s a long time. So what can you do to stop getting bored?
Most young people would say, oh I will go to a seaside resort, lie on the beach and relax. Some, who are more energetic, will say, walking in the mountains, sleeping overnight at mountain huts, is very healthy! Others like going to sports camps, where they can practice every kind of sport. Then there are camps which specialise in music or drama, camps where you can only communicate in a different language for a few weeks. Of course, you can also go to England for a few weeks, take a language course and come home speaking better English than the Queen herself!
This all sounds very good and every student will find something there to enjoy. However, holidays are also the time to help other people, those who are perhaps not so fortunate as yourself. Most towns and cities have organisations which help the elderly, the poor, the sick… Go and knock on their doors and find out what you can do with part of that three-month-long break from school! You will find that the people who need you and your good humour and energy are people who perhaps have never had a holiday. You are their holiday and you will have a lot of stories to tell at the end of it, not to mention adding to your experience of life.
Think about it!
