Typhoon Dujuan heads for Hong Kong
Typhoon (hurricane) Dujuan is on a collision course with Hong Kong. The storm has already battered Taiwan, shutting down airports, disrupting rail travel, and causing a widespread blackout that still affects thousands of homes. Torrential rains are still being reported in Taiwan, and there has been flooding in mountainous areas. One person was reported missing and was feared drowned after being swept away by flood waters.
By noon Tuesday (4 am GMT), the storm was 300 kilometers east of Hong Kong and moving towards the territory at a speed of 35 kilometers per hour. All air traffic to and from Hong Kong was expected to be suspended later in the day. A spokesman for the Hong Kong Observatory called Dujuan 'the strongest typhoon so far this year.'
Hong Kong is no stranger to typhoons, and has seen a number of 'killer' storms. The most devastating of these, known simply as 'The Great Typhoon',occurred in September,1937. More than 10,000 people were killed, and thousands of cargo boats and junks sank.
